The Power of Autonomy

Research suggests we are biologically hardwired to desire autonomy. Having the freedom to say yes or no and feeling like our actions and time are unrestricted are key to personal happiness. We make compromises every day in our relationships which can lead to feelings of dissatisfaction and resentment if we feel they are restricting our autonomy. Only by looking on these small compromises as gifts, or choices freely made, can we keep from having these negative feelings. We almost always have the option to say yes or no. That realization can make your decisions, compromises, and actions feel more like your own autonomous choice.
