NCLR and EQCA Move to Defend Law Protecting LGBT Youth from Psychological Abuse

On September 29th, California Governor Jerry Brown signed a bill into law that prohibits therapists from trying to change the sexual orientation of LGBT youth with practices that have been rejected by the mainstream mental health associations as potentially dangerous and ineffective. The law will take effect on January 1st, 2013, and will make California the first state to ban such practices. The National Association for Research & Therapy of Homosexuality and the Liberty Council have both since filed federal lawsuits challenging the law, prompting the National Center for Lesbian Rights and Equality California to try and intervene on the bill’s defense.
