The November elections brought much good news for the LGBT community. Maine residents voted to legalize same-sex marriage, as did Maryland and Washington residents. Voters in Minnesota voted against a proposed amendment to the state constitution that would ban same-sex marriages. While 32 other states have banned same-sex marriage, this shift may mark the beginning of a new positive trend for the LGBT community. President Obama has publically announced his support for same-sex marriage, repealed “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” extended hospital visitation for same-sex couples, and signed into law a hate crime prevention act. Not only that, but Tammy Baldwin is the first openly lesbian politician voted into the Senate.
