Divorce Therapy—Couples With Mixed Agendas

Many couples seeking therapy to avoid divorce arrive with mixed feelings about the relationship. An estimated 30% of couples in therapy have one spouse wanting to save the relationship while the other is leaning toward divorce. Over the last several years, Dr. William Doherty has been exploring ways of helping distressed couples who find themselves in this position. He has certain suggestions for therapists on how to work with these couples, but admits there is a lack of models and protocols for couples with mixed agendas, and that therapists often have to just muddle their way through.
