Director Barbara Stepansky always felt it was more difficult as a woman to get a job directing major TV shows or movies, but wrote recently about an experience facing open discrimination in the industry. A male friend of hers won a Student Emmy for his thesis film and got an invite from an influential director to shadow him on the set of his TV show. Later, Stepansky’s friend was offered an opportunity to personally direct an episode of the show. This was a bit different than Stepansky’s experience winning the same award for her own Student Emmy. When she inquired about directing an episode, she was told the lead actor hates female directors.
