The Department of Homeland Security has told reporters previously that same-sex relationships will be taken into account when making deportation decisions, but it was still an important step when Secretary Janet Napolitano recently stated officially that immigration agents would be instructed to consider same-sex relationships the same as heterosexual relationships when determining whether an individual will be deported. The instructions were in response to over 80 House Democrats, led by Nancy Pelosi, calling the Department of Homeland Security in late July and requesting for a specific mention of same-sex couples to be added to deportation guidelines.
