Amelia, a contributor for The Huffington Post, blogs about the difficulties of preparing the classroom for her gay-identified seven year old. Amelia’s preparation involves meeting with the second grade teacher and the school principal and making them aware of her son’s identification. The administrators at Amelia’s son’s school are willing to work with her and to be more aware of gay-directed hate speech that school age children use, whether knowingly or innocently, but sexual orientation is not protected in school anti-discrimination policies in their state. Other children may not find a school as understanding and there is no set legal recourse against a school unwilling to work with and protect a gay child.
