Women Underrepresented in Hollywood

Women are grossly underrepresented in the film industry with only 18% of behind-the-scenes employment going to women. This is up from 17% fourteen years ago. Since men make most of the decisions, movies focused on women are less common. Last week, Women in Film presented the 2012 Crystal and Lucy Awards Ceremony honoring women in the film industry. Meryl Streep spoke in detail about the shocking statistics during the ceremony. Five movies aimed at women in the last five years have brought in over $1.6 billion worldwide and cost a fraction of the male-centric movies that have flopped in recent years. Despite these strong numbers, studios continue to make very few women-targeted movies.
