Woman Sheriff Smashes Glass Ceiling

Susan Benton, Sheriff of Highlands County, FL, is the first female sheriff in Florida history to become president of the 118-year-old Florida Sheriff’s Association. She was selected for the honor because of her extensive experience in law enforcement and her multiple awards and honors. Benton is a fifth-generation Floridian. She has been in law enforcement for almost forty years, and was elected Sheriff in 2004. Benton’s great-grandfather was the St. Augustine Chief of Police in the 1920’s, showing that law enforcement is in her blood. Sheriff Benton is the mother of two grown children and grandmother of three grandchildren.
