Tobacco Use Higher for LGBT Individuals

The CDC has recently released their analysis of the 2009-2001 National Adult Tobacco Survey and what they have found is that the LGBT community has an exceptionally high rate of tobacco use compared to the general population. Of LGBT people across the country, 32.8% reported smoking cigarettes compared to 19.5% of the general population. In the LGBT community, 12.2% reported smoking cigar products and 38.5% reported having any tobacco use. Non-LGBT participants reported 6.6% for cigars and 25.2% any use. Bill Blatt, the Director of Tobacco Control Programs at The American Lung Association was pleased to see the specific information in the report so that programs can be funded and targeted for the community.
