Sometimes parents fall into the trap of thinking their teen’s negative behavior is just a “normal phase” and fail to investigate the roots of the behavior. For example, a parent whose teenager is defiant and refuses to communicate may find that she is dealing with depression. Be open-minded as you begin to define the problem and look for solutions. Speak with others with whom your teen interacts to gather information and learn how your child acts when you are not there. If you recognize you’re not the best person to diagnose the problem, make sure to seek qualified professional help. It’s very important for parents to make the effort to look beyond the obvious.
