The Career Tip to Follow Your Passion: Is it Bunk?

According to Cal Newport, the author of the book So Good They Can’t Ignore You, the career advice to follow your passions could be bad advice. Newport believes that pre-existing passions are very rare and that trying to determine a passion and follow it can lead to chronic job-hopping. He maintains that it is much better to find “rare and valuable” talents or skills and to improve on them. Tuning existing skills to the point of craftsmanship can make a person a stronger candidate for jobs involving those skills and lead to a successful career.
