Summer is the prime time for teenagers to find work and learn basic professional skills that will help them in their future careers. This year, however, teens are facing new challenges in finding work. Older unemployed people with more experience are being chosen for entry-level positions over teens with little or no experience. Many teens are faced with applying for job after job with limited success. “They are competing with older people that are having to take jobs that they otherwise would not have taken before, so that is squeezing out the younger people.” said Joe Elling, chief economist for Washington state’s Employment Security Department.
