New HRC Report on LGBT Youth Links Being Out to Happiness, Other Positive Life Factors

In celebration of National Coming Out Day last month, the HRC released a report on the coming out experiences of LGBT youth, which analyzes the results of a previous survey of 10,000 LGBT youth. The new report shows that LGBT youth who are able to come out to their immediate family and peers at school are generally happier, more optimistic, and receive more support and acceptance from important adults in their lives or communities. The only problem is that only 56% of the survey’s participants reported as being out to their family, and only 61% reported being out at school.
