The American Association of Suicidology shows in recent reports that approximately 1.6% of the general population attempt to commit suicide at some point in their lifetime. According to a survey of over six thousand participants by the National Center for Transgender Equality and the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, 41% of transgender citizens reported attempts at suicide. Both quiet members of the transgender community and outspoken activists have completed suicide. Survey results show that transgender individuals are at a noticeably higher risk of attempting and completing suicide, yet this is a health concern not widely recognized.
