Sharing salary information can lead to jealousy, awkwardness, punishment by supervisors, and the spread of rumors. However, there are a few reasons why you may want to share this information with a co-worker. If you believe you are being underpaid for your job, or your entire department is underpaid, sharing salary information with trusted co-workers or former co-workers may give you enough information to ask for a raise. When approaching your boss, do not bring up the disparity in salaries. Instead, use your co-worker’s salary as a point of reference for how much of an increase you should ask for as you highlight your strengths and accomplishments.
