How Lack of Women in Journalism Affects the News Industry

The dearth of women in newsrooms and management affects the news content we see every day. Barbara Selvin, assistant professor and internship coordinator at Stony Brook University’s School of Journalism says news stories will remain predominantly male-sourced and male-focused until newsrooms include and advance women. Many female journalists have the same challenges as women in other fields regarding work/life balance. While freelance positions work for some, women freelancers sacrifice employer benefits and advancement opportunities for the added convenience. Selvin states that while there is no recipe for breaking the glass ceiling, positive action and flexibility on the part of news organizations can improve women’s opportunities.
