Gay Marriage Withstands Legal Threat

The highest court in New York state recently declined to hear a challenge on New York’s gay marriage law, which was the first legal threat of any significance the law has seen since it was implemented. The motion was from a group called New Yorkers for Constitutional Freedoms and claimed the State Senate violated the Open Meetings Law in its deliberations before voting on the gay marriage law last year. The group’s director, Reverend Jason J. McGuire, said the court’s decision was not surprising, but still disappointing. They planned to turn their attention next to legislators, specifically those who voted for the gay marriage law after claiming to oppose it, in the November election.
