Women working in medicine face many obstacles. Among those challenges are work-life balance, less pay, and fewer opportunities for career advancement. Women doctors, just like women in most other professions, take on the bulk of responsibility at home. In some instances this leads to the desire to quit working or to work part-time. However, for doctors part-time pay often comes with more than part-time work. Many women who take this route to be home with children do not advance in their careers. Unless a doctor is successfully able to go into business for herself, she may never be able to set her own hours or have decision-making power.
