Challenges of the Faculty Career for Women: Success and Sacrifice, by Maike Ingrid Philipsen, is an illuminative book focused on the myriad challenges women face when trying to make a career in academia. The author states that most research previously focused on aiding women to succeed in a male-dominated framework without addressing the framework’s flaws. This study is unique as it provides suggestions to correct the framework of faculty careers while studying women in a variety of disciplines and stages of career. She addresses a variety of issues common to women in academic professions including personal/professional life balance, sexual harassment, discrimination, curbing career aspirations, and lack of clear standards for professional advancement.
