7 Common Mistakes in Managing Your Time

There are many reasons a person may feel overwhelmed with their workload. One possible reason is a less than ideal management of working time. For anyone who suspects that a more efficient time management could ease their working day, here is a list of seven common mistakes to avoid in the future. The first is a lack of objectives, priorities, and planning. This involves approaching work in a reactionary way and doing what needs to be done as it appears, rather than entering the door on Monday with a plan for what needs to be accomplished for the day and even the week.

Seeing Through the Glass Ceiling

As women take on high profile business positions, from Marissa Mayer at Yahoo to Sheryl Sandberg at Facebook, the question rises of how these successful women perceive the glass ceilings which social science research reports hold women back. Female executive perception of the glass ceiling can be not only complicated, but can influence whether or not they create policies that will help other women. Sociologists Erin Cech and Mary Blair-Loy, from Rice University and the University of California at San Diego respectively, examined the factors that impact a woman’s perception of the glass ceiling in a recent study.

Gender Pay Gap: How is Britain Faring?

News outlets in Britain were recently publishing claims that female executives in Britain make about £500,000 less than men over the course of their careers. The claims are taken from a survey performed by Chartered Management Institute (CMI) and a human resources firm, XpertHR. The Office of National Statistics regularly publishes pay gap statistics in the Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings (ASHE), giving an interesting comparison between the latest ASHE report and the new CMI survey. Both show the pay gap is still quite large in the business world, though the ASHE reports that the gap across wider society is at its lowest since records have been taken.

N.H. Voters Elect Country’s First Out Transgender Statewide Candidate

Stacie Laughton became the first openly transgendered person in the United States to be elected into state office in early November when New Hampshire voters elected her into the state’s House of Representatives. She and two other Democrats were elected to represent Nashua, the state’s second largest city. In her campaign video, Laughton said she would fight for the rights of the LGBT community, an important promise after previous politicians rejected a 2009 bill to add gender identity to the state’s non-discrimination law. She also told the Nashua Telegraph newspaper that she hopes her election can inspire other members of the LGBT community to run for public office.

NCLR and EQCA Move to Defend Law Protecting LGBT Youth from Psychological Abuse

On September 29th, California Governor Jerry Brown signed a bill into law that prohibits therapists from trying to change the sexual orientation of LGBT youth with practices that have been rejected by the mainstream mental health associations as potentially dangerous and ineffective. The law will take effect on January 1st, 2013, and will make California the first state to ban such practices. The National Association for Research & Therapy of Homosexuality and the Liberty Council have both since filed federal lawsuits challenging the law, prompting the National Center for Lesbian Rights and Equality California to try and intervene on the bill’s defense.

Elections Bring LGBT Victories

The November elections brought much good news for the LGBT community. Maine residents voted to legalize same-sex marriage, as did Maryland and Washington residents. Voters in Minnesota voted against a proposed amendment to the state constitution that would ban same-sex marriages. While 32 other states have banned same-sex marriage, this shift may mark the beginning of a new positive trend for the LGBT community. President Obama has publically announced his support for same-sex marriage, repealed “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” extended hospital visitation for same-sex couples, and signed into law a hate crime prevention act. Not only that, but Tammy Baldwin is the first openly lesbian politician voted into the Senate.
