LGBTQ youth face unique problems in recognizing healthy relationships. LGBTQ youth may have only experienced abusive relationships, so they may not understand what a healthy relationship looks like. Homelessness is also a factor for some LGBTQ teens, and they can become emotionally and financially dependent on their abuser. If an LGBTQ teen has not come out about their sexuality, an abusive partner can use this fact to maintain power and control. LGBTQ teens may be struggling with conflicted feelings or guilt over their orientation and may feel that they don’t deserve better treatment, but everyone has the right to a healthy, loving relationship free from abuse.
